ITS takes pride in the success of its students and teachers who manage to devote some extra time to professional development and expressing their creativity, apart from their regular teaching activities. The teacher of Information Technology School Dr Biljana Velinović currently has her solo exhibition, representing the works created in a flash of inspiration, in her leisure time. Her art is expressed through different media, and the starting point of this opus, currently exhibited, originates from folklore and religious-holiday-related customs.
The Red Letter Exhibition comprises the works of our teacher Velinović created in the course of the last two years. A variety of techniques have been applied, including: photographs printed on canvas, embroidery, eggshell print, videos, stamped dough etc. Experimenting with different media, the author has revealed her understanding of Serbian cultures and customs. She conveys an important message regarding the significance of the preservation of our language, the importance of remembrance and commemoration of the events relevant for the future generations. The theme of the tragic death of Aleksinac miners in 1989 has been specially emphasised, by exhibiting the miners’ own helmets decorated with embroidery to evoke the role of a woman of the past times, as known in our folklore and customs, burdened with everyday household chores, but forced to wait endlessly for their spouses to come back home, fearing the worst.
The only way to explain who we are is to tell our own story, to choose the key events that shape us and order them following the formal narrative principles. Only in such a manner can an event, a person or a place surpass the memory of an individual and grow in the reminiscence of a group, says the author.
Teacher Biljana Velinović has a successful career and an impressive artistic experience confirmed by numerous exhibitions held in the region during the last fifteen or so years. She has been a multiple recipient of awards for mural painting, video and mosaic. She is a professor of applied studies at the Information Technology School for the subjects Video Production and Visual Effects and she is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Contemporary Art for the subject Multimedia Arts, Digital Drawing and Mural.
The opening of the exhibition The Red Letter on the 20 April in the Gallery of the Student Cultural Centre was visited by a large number of guests. The exhibition was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Contemporary Arts, Professor Mr Saša Filipović.
The exhibition can be visited till 6 May. We seize this opportunity to invite you to visit it and discover details from our past and culture that the author does not let be forgotten.
