A review of the book Introduction to Applied Research, authored by Slavko Pokorni, PhD, a professor at ITS, and published by ITS in 2020, has been published in the academic journal Railways, issue number 66/1.
The review of the book Introduction to Applied Research (an academic paper) for the journal Railways was written by ITS professors Aleksandar Kostić, PhD and Slobodan Obradović, PhD, the reviewers of the textbook. The review points out that the textbook is primarily aimed at students studying for a Master of Professional Studies, and that it was based on the syllabus of the ITS course with the same name in order to make it easy for students to grasp the subject matter of the course and also to write their master’s thesis.
The texbook comprises 300 pages, including a table of contents, a preface, references and 13 appendices, which include: a comparison between basic and applied researches, the process of conducting applied research; what is and what is not an IT project; the book provides an example of a project, a glossary and an index. As the authors of the review say, the real significance as well as “the main focus of the textbook lies in the explanation of what research is and how it is carried out“. In 14 chapters, Application of Basic Research explains all the phases of the research process – from identifying and formulating the problem, finding appropriate literature and analyzing the results, to reporting about the conducted research and publishing the results, including the master’s thesis. It is for this reason that it is significant not only for the students at ITS, but also for other students studying for a Master of Professional Studies and students from other colleges offering professional academic programs, as well as for the lecturers working there, considering that master professional academic programs are a new addition to Serbia’s Law on Higher Education.
The academic journal Railways has a long tradition and was published continuously for 61 years, from 1945 to June 2005. It was founded by the Ministry of Transport of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia under the name Transport. After more than 11 years out of print, it was refounded in 2016. The journal is distributed in Serbia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia. This is the fourth review of an ITS publication to be published in this journal. A review of Project Management, a book by authors Marko Ranković and Milena Ilić and published by ITS in 2018, was published in the 64/1 issue, while a review of Advanced Databases, an ITS publication from 2017 by professor Milosav Majstorović, was published in the 65/1 issue. A review of the book Project Management and Organisation – A Practicum with Case Studies, an ITS publication by Milena Ilić and Marko Raković that came out in 2020, was published in the 65/2 issue.
So far, the journal has published a great many academic papers written by the professors, teaching associates and younger professionals at ITS. This is also true for the current issue, which contains papers by our teaching associate Nikola Pavlović and our students and graduates Aleksandar Todosić, Luka Kecman and Marko Subotić. We’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the authors!
ITS has a rich history of publishing, whose purpose is to provide our students with all the resources necessary for personal growth and development. We are pleased that the reviewers and the editorial board of the journal recognize the quality of our school’s publishing and of the academic and applied research of our professors, teaching associates and younger professionals, and we eagerly await the new issue.
